Celebrating the 2600 Year Anniversary

of the Founding of the Bhikkhunī Sangha

The September 2016 to September 2017 full moons mark the 2600-year anniversary of the foundation of the newly re-emerged Theravāda Bhikkhunī Sangha. Most importantly, this is a shared or co-anniversary with the fulfillment of the Buddha's intention to have a Fourfold Assembly—or Fourfold Sangha. His intention is now completed with the re-establishment of the Bhikkhunīs' fold of the Sangha.  Together, the four folds form what is one of the oldest intentional communities in the world. In this Issue of American Buddhist Women, we launch the year-long celebration of this Anniversary. This issue of American Buddhist Women is guest-edited by Tathaaloka Bhikkhunī, and her assisting editors: Adhimutta Bhikkhunī, Samaneri Niyyanika and Kathleen O’Flynn.
